Stendhal

Stendhal was the pen name of Marie-Henri Beyle (1783–1842), a French novelist and essayist whose works include The Red and the Black and The Charterhouse of Parma.

The Red and the Black: Stendhal’s 1830 novel follows Julien Sorel, a carpenter’s son pursuing status in post-Napoleonic France. Its portrait of Julien’s ambition is Stendhal’s best-known study of social ascent.
