Stenka Razin

Stenka Razin was a Don Cossack leader who headed a major uprising against the Russian state in 1670–1671. His rebellion drew Cossacks, peasants, and townspeople into a challenge to state authority and social hierarchy.

Don Cossacks: A Cossack community based along the Don River, historically organized around military service and substantial local autonomy. Razin’s authority and initial following came from this Cossack community.
