Stenotherm

A stenotherm is an organism that tolerates only a narrow range of environmental temperatures, making its survival and activity especially sensitive to thermal change.

Thermal tolerance: The range of temperatures an organism can withstand while maintaining survival or function. A stenotherm is defined by having a narrow range of thermal tolerance.
Thermal acclimation: A reversible physiological adjustment to a change in temperature. Acclimation can shift thermal limits without changing an organism's inherited tolerance breadth.
Coral bleaching: The loss of symbiotic algae or their pigments from corals, often triggered by prolonged heat stress. Many reef-building corals have narrow thermal limits, so marine heatwaves can trigger bleaching.
Thermal niche conservatism: The persistence of a species' thermal niche over evolutionary time. A stenotherm may remain tied to a narrow climate regime as environments shift.
Thermophile: An organism adapted to grow or thrive at high temperatures. Thermophile names a high-temperature adaptation, while stenotherm describes a narrow tolerance range.
Eurytherm: An organism that tolerates a broad range of environmental temperatures. Eurytherms contrast with stenotherms in the breadth of temperatures they can endure.
Thermoregulation: The control of body temperature through physiological or behavioral processes. Temperature control can reduce exposure to conditions a stenotherm cannot tolerate.
Thermal pollution: Human-caused changes in water temperature that disrupt aquatic ecosystems. Sudden warming or cooling can exceed the narrow tolerances of stenothermic aquatic organisms.
Range shift: A change in the geographic distribution of a species over time. Moving toward suitable temperatures can be one response when a stenotherm's habitat warms.
Psychrophile: An organism adapted to grow optimally at low temperatures. Psychrophile specifies cold adaptation, not whether the organism tolerates a narrow temperature range.
