Stephen A. Douglas

Stephen A. Douglas was an American politician who represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate and debated Abraham Lincoln during their 1858 Senate campaign.

Abraham Lincoln: Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and a leading opponent of slavery’s expansion. Lincoln challenged Douglas in the 1858 Senate campaign, turning their debates into a national political event.
Kansas–Nebraska Act: The 1854 law organized Kansas and Nebraska territories and allowed settlers to decide slavery’s status through popular sovereignty. Douglas sponsored this law, whose repeal of the Missouri Compromise restriction brought him national controversy.
Popular sovereignty: Popular sovereignty is the principle that a territory’s residents should decide whether slavery is permitted there. Douglas made this principle the center of his territorial policy and defense of the Kansas–Nebraska Act.
