Stephen Foster

Stephen Foster (1826–1864) was an American songwriter whose popular songs, including “Oh! Susanna,” “Camptown Races,” and “Beautiful Dreamer,” shaped nineteenth-century American music.

Oh! Susanna: A song Stephen Foster wrote in 1848 that became one of the most widely performed songs of the nineteenth century. Its commercial success helped establish Foster as a nationally known songwriter.
