Stephen Girard

Stephen Girard (1750–1831) was a French-born American merchant, banker, and philanthropist whose fortune helped stabilize the United States during the War of 1812. His bequest founded Girard College, a school for orphaned boys in Philadelphia.

Nicholas Biddle: An American financier who led the Second Bank of the United States from 1823 to 1836. Biddle later directed the national bank Girard had helped sustain during the War of 1812.
Merchant banking: A form of finance in which merchants use trade networks and capital to arrange loans, investments, and commercial transactions. Girard combined commerce with lending rather than relying on a single source of wealth.
