Stephen Jay Gould

Stephen Jay Gould was an American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and science writer known for punctuated equilibrium and essays on evolution, fossils, and the history of science.

Punctuated equilibrium: An evolutionary model in which long periods of relative stasis are interrupted by comparatively brief episodes of rapid change. Gould and Niles Eldredge introduced this model to explain patterns in the fossil record.
