Stephen the Great

Stephen III was prince of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504. He defended his principality against Ottoman expansion and founded churches and monasteries.

Battle of Vaslui: A 1475 Moldavian victory over an Ottoman army near Vaslui, led by Stephen III. This victory became the most celebrated example of Stephen's resistance to Ottoman forces.
Suceava Fortress: A fortified stronghold in Suceava that served as a principal residence and defensive center of Moldavian rulers. It anchored Stephen's defense of the Moldavian capital against invading armies.

Petru Aron: A prince of Moldavia who ruled intermittently from 1451 to 1457 and killed Bogdan II. Stephen's accession followed his campaign against the ruler responsible for his father's death.
Stephen the Great's canonization: The Romanian Orthodox Church's 1992 recognition of Stephen III as a saint, commemorated on July 2. His later sainthood joined his military reputation to religious memory.
Mehmed II: The Ottoman sultan who ruled from 1451 to 1481 and conquered Constantinople in 1453. His campaign against Moldavia culminated in the 1476 invasion Stephen resisted.
