Stereoscopy

Stereoscopy produces a perception of depth by presenting different images to the two eyes, which the visual system combines into a three-dimensional scene.

Binocular disparity: The difference between the images received by the two eyes because they view the world from slightly different positions. Stereoscopic images encode depth through controlled differences between the two eyes' views.
Interpupillary distance: The distance between the centers of the pupils of the two eyes. Camera spacing often approximates this distance to create familiar stereo depth.
Anaglyph 3D: A stereoscopic imaging technique that encodes two views in different colors and separates them with colored filters. It is a simple way to deliver separate views using colored glasses.
Monocular depth cue: A visual feature that signals depth using information available to one eye alone. These cues can convey depth without paired images or binocular disparity.
Stereopsis: The perception of depth that arises from comparing the slightly different images seen by the two eyes. It is the perceptual depth effect stereoscopy aims to produce.
Parallax: The apparent shift in an object's position when viewed from different locations. Stereoscopic image differences are a visual form of parallax between viewpoints.
Polarized 3D system: A stereoscopic display system that separates left- and right-eye images by their polarization states. The method lets both eye views share a screen while polarized glasses separate them.
Motion parallax: The apparent relative movement of objects at different distances when an observer moves. It produces depth from changing viewpoints over time rather than simultaneous eye images.
Binocular vision: Vision in which the two eyes contribute information to a shared perceptual experience. Stereoscopy relies on the visual system's ability to combine input from both eyes.
Camera: An optical device that records images by focusing light onto a photosensitive sensor or film. A stereo camera captures the distinct viewpoints needed for an image pair.
