Stoma

A surgically created opening in the abdomen that diverts urine or feces from the body when the usual route is unavailable or needs to rest.

Ostomy surgery: Surgery that creates an opening from an internal organ through the abdominal wall. It forms the stoma by bringing a segment of bowel or urinary tract to the skin.
Colostomy: A surgically created opening that routes stool from the colon through the abdominal wall. It is the type of stoma formed from the large intestine.
Colorectal cancer: Cancer that begins in the colon or rectum. Surgery for some tumors requires a temporary or permanent fecal diversion.
Temporary ostomy: An ostomy intended to be reversed after the diverted section of bowel or urinary tract can be used again. Unlike a permanent stoma, it is created with a planned later reconnection when feasible.
Stoma construction: The surgical technique for bringing an organ segment through the abdominal wall and securing it to the skin. Its shape, height, and blood supply influence how well the stoma functions.
Ileostomy: A surgically created opening that routes intestinal contents from the ileum through the abdominal wall. It drains the small intestine, usually producing looser output than a colostomy.
Inflammatory bowel disease: Chronic intestinal inflammation, chiefly Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis. Severe disease or surgery may make an ileostomy or colostomy necessary.
Permanent ostomy: An ostomy intended to provide a lasting route for waste elimination. It contrasts with temporary diversion designed for later reversal.
Ostomy appliance: A pouching system that adheres to the skin around a stoma and collects its output. It provides the external collection route for waste leaving the stoma.
Urostomy: A surgically created route that diverts urine through an abdominal opening. It is a urinary stoma rather than an opening that discharges stool.
