Stomata

Stomata are microscopic pores in plant surfaces, typically bordered by guard cells. They regulate carbon dioxide uptake, oxygen release, and water-vapor loss by opening and closing.

Guard cell: A specialized epidermal cell that changes shape to regulate a plant stoma. Paired guard cells open or close each pore by changing their turgor.
Plant epidermis: The outermost cell layer covering a plant's primary organs. Stomata are specialized openings within this protective surface layer.
Water-use efficiency: The amount of carbon gained or biomass produced per unit of water used. Stomatal regulation sets a trade-off between carbon uptake and water loss.
Stomatal ratio: The proportion of stomata found on one plant surface relative to another or to epidermal cells. Its variation raises questions about how plants balance gas exchange and water conservation.
Stomatal conductance: A measure of how readily gases pass through stomata. It quantifies the pore-level control of carbon dioxide uptake and water-vapor loss.
Mesophyll: The internal leaf tissue where most photosynthesis and gas exchange occur. Carbon dioxide entering stomata diffuses through air spaces toward mesophyll cells.
Intrinsic water-use efficiency: The ratio of photosynthetic carbon assimilation to stomatal conductance. It isolates how efficiently leaves exchange carbon for water through stomata.
Stomatal density: The number of stomata per unit area of plant surface. Density varies with development and environment, shaping potential gas exchange.
Abscisic acid: A plant hormone involved in stress responses, seed dormancy, and growth regulation. Drought-triggered abscisic acid signaling prompts guard cells to close stomata.
Carbon dioxide: A colorless gas used by plants as a carbon source in photosynthesis. Stomata provide the main pathway for atmospheric carbon dioxide to enter leaves.
