Stored-product pest

A stored-product pest is an organism that infests and damages food or other goods during storage, reducing their quality, safety, or usability.

Commodity infestation: The presence and development of pest organisms in stored agricultural or manufactured goods. It describes the damage process that makes an organism a stored-product pest.
Stored-product insect: An insect that feeds or develops in stored commodities or their packaging. Insects account for many of the most common and damaging storage infestations.
Grain storage: The preservation of harvested cereal grains between harvest and use or sale. Grain is a major target of storage pests and requires protection from insects, mites, and rodents.
Rice weevil: A small beetle whose larvae develop inside kernels of rice and other grains. Its concealed larval development makes infestations difficult to detect before grain is damaged.

Stored-product mite: A small arachnid that infests stored food and can contaminate it with bodies and waste. Mites are a distinct pest group, especially in damp or moldy commodities.
Food safety: The handling and production practices that prevent food from causing illness or injury. Pests threaten safety through contamination, allergens, and the spread of microorganisms.
Red flour beetle: A beetle that feeds on flour and other milled grain products. It thrives in processed foods and often signals persistent problems in mills or stores.
Controlled atmosphere storage: Storage that alters oxygen, carbon dioxide, or nitrogen levels to preserve commodities. Changing the atmosphere can suppress pests without relying solely on conventional insecticides.
Rodent: A mammal of the order Rodentia, characterized by continuously growing incisors. Rats and mice consume and contaminate stored food while damaging containers and buildings.
