Story Musgrave

Story Musgrave is an American physician and former NASA astronaut who flew six Space Shuttle missions. He participated in the repair and servicing of the Hubble Space Telescope.

STS-6: The 1983 Space Shuttle mission that deployed the first Tracking and Data Relay Satellite and included the first spacewalk from Challenger. Musgrave made his first spaceflight on this mission.
Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions: A series of Space Shuttle missions that repaired, upgraded, and maintained the Hubble Space Telescope in orbit. Musgrave’s work on STS-61 was part of this broader maintenance program.

STS-61 spacewalks: The five extravehicular activities performed during STS-61 to install corrective optics and upgrade Hubble’s instruments and systems. Musgrave conducted two of these spacewalks, including the mission’s first.
Charles Bolden: An American astronaut and Marine Corps pilot who commanded four Space Shuttle missions and later led NASA. Bolden commanded STS-61, where Musgrave helped service Hubble.
COSTAR: The Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement, a device installed in Hubble to correct the effects of its flawed primary mirror. STS-61 installed COSTAR during the servicing work Musgrave performed.
STS-33: The 1989 Space Shuttle Discovery mission that deployed a classified payload for the U.S. Department of Defense. This was Musgrave’s third spaceflight.
Extravehicular activity: Work performed by an astronaut outside a spacecraft while wearing a pressure suit. Musgrave’s Hubble repairs required sustained work outside Endeavour.
