Storyboarding

Storyboarding plans a sequence of shots and actions through ordered drawings, often annotated with dialogue, camera movement, and timing.

Storyboard panel: A single drawing in a storyboard that represents a shot or moment in a sequence. Each panel fixes a visual beat that can be revised before production.
Animation: The creation of moving images by displaying a sequence of still images. Animation often uses boards to establish story, staging, and visual continuity before drawing frames.
Winsor McCay: An American cartoonist and animator known for early animated films including Gertie the Dinosaur. His meticulous planning drawings exemplify precursors to organized animation storyboards.
Composition (visual arts): The arrangement of visual elements within an image. Panel composition directs attention and clarifies the relationship between subjects.
Script: A written plan for dialogue, action, and other elements of a performance or audiovisual work. A script describes events in words; a storyboard specifies their visual staging.
Shot list: An ordered inventory of planned camera shots for a production. It translates storyboard images into a practical record of shots to capture.
Film production: The process of developing, filming, and completing a motion picture. Live-action crews use boards to plan complex scenes and communicate intended shots.
Walt Disney Studios: An American animation studio founded by Walt and Roy Disney in 1923. The studio developed storyboard practices into a central method for organizing animated features.
Blocking (stage): The planned positioning and movement of performers in a scene. Boards map blocking so that actions remain legible from chosen viewpoints.
Mood board: A collection of images, colors, and materials used to communicate a project’s visual direction. Mood boards establish an overall look, while storyboards map shots in sequence.
