Strait of Gibraltar

A narrow waterway between southern Spain and northern Morocco that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea.

Atlantic–Mediterranean exchange: The two-way movement of water between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar. Atlantic surface inflow and Mediterranean deep outflow pass through this gateway.
Messinian salinity crisis: A late Miocene episode when restricted Atlantic inflow caused extensive evaporation and salt deposition in the Mediterranean basin. Closure of the Gibraltar gateway helped trigger this extreme restriction of Mediterranean water exchange.
Pillars of Hercules: The ancient name for the landmarks flanking the western entrance to the Mediterranean, commonly identified with Gibraltar and Jebel Musa. These legendary pillars frame the strait's entrance from the Atlantic.
Port of Algeciras: A major Spanish port on Algeciras Bay, near the Strait of Gibraltar. Its location makes it a major hub for ships entering or leaving the strait.
Suez Canal: An artificial waterway in Egypt connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea. Unlike Gibraltar's natural gateway, the Suez Canal links the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean route.
Mediterranean outflow water: Salty, dense water that exits the Mediterranean and spreads into the northeastern Atlantic at depth. This deep current forms as Mediterranean water flows west through the strait.
Zanclean flood: The rapid refilling of the Mediterranean at the start of the Pliocene, about 5.33 million years ago. The reopening of the Atlantic connection at Gibraltar is linked to this refilling.
Battle of Trafalgar: The 1805 naval battle off southwestern Spain in which a British fleet defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets. Its location near the strait reflects the passage's strategic role in Atlantic-Mediterranean naval routes.
Port of Tangier Med: A large Moroccan commercial port on the Strait of Gibraltar east of Tangier. It handles cargo and transshipment traffic along the strait's southern shore.
Strait of Sicily: The sea passage between Sicily and Tunisia separating the western and eastern Mediterranean basins. It is a Mediterranean passage, but does not connect the sea to the Atlantic.
