Strait of Messina

The Strait of Messina is a narrow sea passage separating Sicily from mainland Italy and connecting the Tyrrhenian Sea with the Ionian Sea.

Tidal current: A horizontal flow of seawater driven primarily by the rise and fall of tides. Tides flowing through this constricted passage produce unusually strong currents.
Sicily: The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and an autonomous region of Italy. Its eastern shore forms one side of the strait.
Ferry: A vessel that carries passengers, vehicles, or goods across a body of water on a regular route. Ferries provide the principal direct crossing between Sicily and mainland Italy.
Odyssey: An ancient Greek epic attributed to Homer, recounting Odysseus’s journey home after the Trojan War. Its account of Scylla and Charybdis helped make the passage legendary.
Tidal bore: A wave that travels upstream in a river or estuary as the tide rises. Tidal flows in the strait can generate bore-like waves along nearby coasts.
Calabria: A region of southern Italy occupying the peninsula’s toe. The mainland coast of Calabria forms the strait’s northeastern side.
Messina railway station: A railway station in Messina serving regional and long-distance train services. Rail passengers can continue across the strait using train-ferry services.
Charybdis: A sea monster in Greek mythology whose swallowing and regurgitating of water created a deadly whirlpool. Ancient writers associated Charybdis with the dangerous waters near the strait.
Whirlpool: A rotating body of water formed when currents or tides create circulation around an axis. Contrasting currents and seabed features can create conspicuous rotating flows here.
Tyrrhenian Sea: A part of the Mediterranean Sea bounded by Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica. The strait opens northwest into this Mediterranean basin.
