Strategic bomber

A long-range military aircraft designed to attack an adversary’s strategic targets, including industrial centers, infrastructure, and military bases.

Bomb bay: An enclosed compartment in an aircraft fuselage for carrying and releasing weapons. Internal bomb bays let many strategic bombers carry weapons while reducing aerodynamic drag.
Strategic bombing during World War I: Air attacks during World War I aimed at targets beyond the immediate battlefield. These early raids established the idea that aircraft could strike an enemy’s rear areas.
Strategic bombing: A military air campaign directed at an adversary’s capacity or will to wage war. It is the mission category that gives strategic bombers their name.
Tactical bomber: An aircraft designed primarily to attack targets in or near a battlefield. Its shorter-range battlefield role contrasts with the strategic bomber’s distant-target mission.
Area bombing: The bombing of broad urban or industrial areas rather than only individually selected targets. Strategic bomber campaigns used area attacks that caused extensive destruction and civilian deaths.
Aerial refueling: The transfer of fuel from one aircraft to another during flight. It extends bomber range and can reduce dependence on overseas bases.
Giulio Douhet: An Italian air-power theorist who argued that air forces could decide wars by attacking populations and industry. His theories helped popularize the independent strategic bombing mission.
Nuclear triad: A state’s nuclear forces divided among land-based missiles, submarines, and aircraft. Bombers provide the air leg, which can be recalled and visibly deployed.
Intercontinental ballistic missile: A ballistic missile capable of traveling between continents to deliver a payload. It can deliver strategic weapons without an aircraft’s flight time or recallability.
Firebombing of Dresden: The Allied air raid on Dresden, Germany, in February 1945, which caused widespread fires and destruction. The raid remains a prominent case in debates over strategic bombing and civilian harm.
