Knowra Strawberry Strawberry A strawberry is an aggregate accessory fruit whose fleshy edible portion develops from a flower’s receptacle. Its surface bears small dry fruits, each containing a seed.
Aggregate fruit : A fruit formed from multiple ovaries of one flower. A strawberry groups many tiny fruits into one edible structure.
Pollination : The transfer of pollen to a flower’s stigma, enabling fertilization in seed plants. Successful pollination across the flower’s many pistils supports even achene development.
Garden strawberry : The cultivated strawberry species Fragaria × ananassa, grown worldwide for its fruit. This hybrid species supplies most strawberries sold as fresh fruit.
True berry : A fleshy fruit developed from one flower’s ovary, usually with seeds embedded in its pulp. Unlike a botanical true berry, a strawberry’s flesh comes mainly from the receptacle.
Accessory fruit : A fruit whose edible tissue includes parts of a flower beyond the ovary. Most of the strawberry’s fleshy portion develops from the receptacle, not the ovaries.
Fertilization in plants : The fusion of plant gametes that forms an embryo inside a seed. Fertilization produces the seeds enclosed within the strawberry’s achenes.
Fragaria : A genus of flowering plants that includes strawberries. Cultivated strawberries belong to this genus, alongside wild strawberry species.
Raspberry : An aggregate fruit made of small drupelets formed from one flower’s multiple ovaries. Raspberries are aggregate fruits too, but their edible units are fleshy drupelets rather than surface achenes.
Receptacle (botany) : The part of a flower stalk where floral organs attach. After flowering, this structure enlarges to form the strawberry’s flesh.
Auxin : A class of plant hormones that regulates growth and development. Developing achenes produce signals, including auxin, that promote receptacle growth.
