Strike-slip fault

A fault where movement is mainly horizontal and parallel to its strike. Its two sides move laterally past one another, either right-laterally or left-laterally.

Fault plane: The surface along which two blocks of rock move relative to one another. Strike-slip motion occurs along this surface, whose orientation defines the fault’s strike.
San Andreas Fault: A major right-lateral strike-slip fault system in California marking part of the Pacific–North American plate boundary. It is a widely studied example of continental right-lateral motion.
Strike and dip: The orientation of a planar geological feature, described by its horizontal direction and angle of inclination. Strike-slip displacement is defined relative to the fault’s strike.
LiDAR: A remote-sensing method that measures distance using reflected laser light. Bare-earth LiDAR can reveal subtle scarps and offsets along strike-slip faults.
Pull-apart basin: A depression formed where strike-slip fault segments step apart and the intervening crust subsides. Releasing bends create localized extension within an otherwise laterally moving fault system.
Right-lateral fault: A strike-slip fault on which the opposite block appears to move right. This is one of the two possible senses of horizontal displacement.
North Anatolian Fault: A major right-lateral strike-slip fault system crossing northern Turkey. Its earthquakes demonstrate how rupture can propagate along a long continental fault.
Fault (geology): A fracture or zone of fractures along which blocks of rock have moved relative to one another. Strike-slip faults are one kinematic class within the broader family of geological faults.
InSAR: A satellite radar technique that maps ground-surface displacement using interferometry. It can measure surface deformation around active strike-slip faults.
Pressure ridge: A ridge formed by compression where strike-slip fault segments step toward one another or bend. Restraining bends convert lateral motion into local shortening and uplift.
