Strobilus

A compact reproductive structure bearing sporangia, usually arranged around a central axis. Strobili occur in clubmosses, horsetails, and many conifers.

Spore: A reproductive cell that can develop into a new organism without fusing with another cell. Strobili bear sporangia that produce spores.
Lycopodium: A genus of clubmosses whose upright shoots commonly bear terminal strobili. Its compact terminal strobili are a familiar clubmoss example.
Heterospory: The production of two spore sizes, typically associated with male and female gametophytes. Some strobili bear distinct sporangia producing microspores and megaspores.
Conifer cone: A woody or fleshy reproductive structure of conifers, bearing pollen sacs or ovules on scales. Conifer cones are strobili, but their seed-bearing scales distinguish them from spore cones.
Sporophyll: A leaf or leaf-like structure that bears one or more sporangia. Strobili commonly consist of sporophylls arranged around an axis.
Selaginella: A genus of lycophytes that usually bears strobili containing two kinds of sporangia. Its strobili show how one cone can bear microsporangia and megasporangia.
Microspore: A small spore that develops into a male gametophyte in heterosporous plants. Microsporangia in some strobili release these male-gametophyte precursors.
Flower: The reproductive structure of angiosperms, composed of organs such as stamens and carpels. Flowers reproduce through ovules and seeds rather than the exposed sporangia typical of spore strobili.
Plant life cycle: The succession of sporophyte and gametophyte stages in a plant's reproduction. A strobilus belongs to the spore-producing sporophyte stage.
Equisetum: The living genus of horsetails, with jointed shoots and terminal spore-bearing cones. Its terminal cones are strobili built from whorls of sporangiophores.
