Strontium oxide

Strontium oxide (SrO), commonly called strontia, is an ionic compound made of strontium and oxide ions. It is a basic oxide that reacts with water to form strontium hydroxide.

Ionic bonding: Chemical bonding produced by electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. Strontium transfers electrons to oxygen, producing the ions held together in SrO.
Cathode-ray tube: An evacuated electronic display tube in which electron beams strike a phosphor-coated screen. Strontium-containing glass was used in the faceplates of color tubes to absorb X-rays.
Strontium: A soft, reactive alkaline-earth metal with atomic number 38. Strontium atoms provide the positive ions in SrO.
Barium oxide: An alkaline-earth metal oxide with formula BaO. BaO is the heavier Group 2 analogue, with different density and reactivity.
Strontium hydroxide: A strong base with formula Sr(OH)₂, formed when strontium oxide reacts with water. Adding water converts SrO into this hydroxide.
Strontium aluminate: A strontium-containing ceramic compound used in persistent phosphors and other materials. Strontium oxide supplies strontium in routes to this functional ceramic.
Oxygen: A chemical element with atomic number 8 that forms oxide ions in many ionic compounds. Oxygen becomes the doubly charged anion in strontium oxide.
Calcium oxide: A strongly basic alkaline-earth oxide with formula CaO, commonly called quicklime. Quicklime shares SrO’s basic chemistry but is far more widely used.
Basic oxide: An oxide that reacts with acids to form salts and water, and often forms a base with water. SrO displays the characteristic acid-neutralizing behavior of a basic oxide.
Strontium ferrite: A hard ferrimagnetic ceramic, SrFe₁₂O₁₉, used to make permanent magnets. SrO can serve as a strontium source when this ferrite is prepared.
