Structural coloration

Structural coloration is color produced when microscopic structures selectively reflect, scatter, or interfere with light, rather than through pigments or dyes.

Thin-film interference: Interference between light waves reflected from different boundaries of a thin layer produces wavelength-selective colors. Layered structures create color when reflected waves reinforce or cancel at particular wavelengths.
Visible spectrum: The range of electromagnetic wavelengths detectable by the human eye, roughly 380 to 700 nanometers. Structural colors arise when optical structures redirect wavelengths within this range.
Morpho butterfly: A group of neotropical butterflies whose vivid blue wing scales contain light-reflecting microscopic ridges. Ridge structures on its scales produce intense blue through wavelength-selective reflection.
Structural color printing: A printing approach that creates visible colors through designed micro- and nanostructures rather than colorants. It applies structural coloration to images and patterns with potentially durable, pigment-free color.
Pigment: A substance that selectively absorbs and reflects light, producing color through its wavelength-dependent absorption. Pigments create color by selective absorption, unlike structures that redirect or interfere with light.
Bragg reflection: Periodic structures reflect waves strongly when their spacing satisfies a wavelength-dependent interference condition. Regular nanoscale spacing selects reflected wavelengths in many structural colors.
Wavelength: The distance between successive corresponding points of a wave, such as adjacent peaks. Structure dimensions comparable to light wavelengths often determine the resulting color.
Peacock: A large pheasant known for the male’s iridescent train feathers, marked with eye-like patterns. Ordered nanostructures in feather barbules generate angle-dependent greens and blues.
Structural color in textiles: The use of microscopic optical structures to produce color in fibers or fabrics. Textile designs can reproduce bright colors while reducing dependence on dyes.
Dye: A soluble colorant that binds to or penetrates a material to give it color. Dyes color materials through molecular absorption rather than microscopic optical architecture.
