Structural film

Structural film is an avant-garde tendency that makes a film’s formal organization and material conditions—such as duration, framing, and projection—central to the work.

Flicker film: A film form that creates visual pulses by alternating light and dark frames. Its repeated flashes make film projection and viewing conditions part of the subject.
Wavelength: Michael Snow’s 1967 film, structured around a slow zoom across a New York loft. Its nearly continuous zoom turns camera movement and elapsed time into the film’s organizing structure.
Peter Kubelka: An Austrian filmmaker known for highly compressed, formally rigorous experimental films. His frame-by-frame constructions helped establish a model for cinema organized by pattern.
