Student exchange program

A student exchange program lets students study temporarily at a host school or university while remaining enrolled at a home institution. Participants may travel internationally or exchange places within one country.

Student mobility: The movement of students between educational institutions, regions, or countries for study. Exchange programs are one organized form of temporary movement between institutions.
Erasmus+: A European Union program supporting education, training, youth, and sport, including cross-border student mobility. Its higher-education mobility schemes are a prominent model for organized university exchange.
Direct enrollment study abroad: Study abroad in which a student enrolls directly at a foreign institution rather than through an exchange arrangement. Unlike exchange, direct enrollment may lack a reciprocal institutional partnership.
Intercultural competence: The ability to communicate and act effectively across cultural differences. Living and studying in a host setting can provide practice interpreting unfamiliar norms.
Learning agreement: A document specifying the courses and academic activities a student will complete during a period of study abroad. It helps the home and host institutions agree in advance on coursework and credit recognition.
University exchange program: A partnership through which universities send students to study temporarily at one another’s institutions. This is the common form of exchange for students pursuing higher education.
Faculty-led study abroad: A short-term overseas academic program organized and taught by faculty from a home institution. It usually keeps instruction under home-campus control rather than placing students at a partner institution.
Second-language acquisition: The process of learning a language beyond a person’s first language. Immersion in a host country can create frequent opportunities to use another language.
Academic credit transfer: The recognition of completed coursework by an educational institution other than the one where it was taken. Transferred credits can let exchange students count host-institution courses toward their home degree.
High school exchange program: A program placing secondary-school students at a host school, often with a local family, for a temporary period. School-age exchanges adapt the model to younger students and host-family life.
