Studio pottery

Studio pottery is ceramic work made by individual artists or small workshops, often in small batches. It emphasizes the maker’s authorship, direct control of the process, and the expressive qualities of form and surface.

Pottery: Objects made from clay that has been shaped and hardened by heat. Studio pottery is one maker-centered approach within pottery’s wider history and practice.
Arts and Crafts movement: A reform movement that promoted skilled handwork and design in response to industrial production. Its defense of craft helped establish the cultural case for independent ceramic workshops.
Industrial ceramics: Ceramic products manufactured at scale through standardized industrial processes. Studio pottery typically prioritizes individual decisions and variation over uniform output.
Tableware: Dishes, cups, and serving vessels used for eating and drinking. Many studio potters make functional tableware in small batches or as one-off pieces.
Potter's wheel: A rotating platform used to shape clay, especially into symmetrical vessels. Wheel-throwing is a common way studio potters form bowls, cups, and other vessels.
Bernard Leach: A British potter and writer who helped shape modern studio pottery. His teaching and writing linked workshop practice to a distinct international movement.
Production pottery: Pottery made in repeated batches by workshops or manufacturers for sale and use. Studio pottery usually foregrounds an individual maker more strongly than production pottery does.
Ceramic sculpture: Sculptural works formed from clay and hardened by firing. Some studio potters use ceramic processes to create objects intended primarily for display.
Kiln: An insulated oven used to fire clay and other materials at high temperatures. Small workshops control firing conditions in their own kilns or shared facilities.
Leach Pottery: A pottery workshop founded by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada in St Ives, Cornwall. The workshop became a center for teaching and practicing studio pottery.
