Styrene

Styrene is an aromatic hydrocarbon with the formula C₈H₈ and a vinyl group attached to a benzene ring. It is used chiefly as a monomer for polystyrene and several synthetic rubbers.

Free-radical polymerization: A chain-growth polymerization in which reactive radicals add monomers to a growing polymer chain. This common route links styrene molecules into polystyrene.
Expanded polystyrene: A lightweight cellular material made by expanding polystyrene beads or foam. Styrene-derived foam is used for insulation and protective packaging.
William H. Perkin: An English chemist who discovered mauveine and helped establish the synthetic dye industry. Perkin’s work on styryl compounds helped bring the name styrene into chemical history.
Styrene oxide: A reactive epoxide formed when styrene is metabolized or oxidized. This metabolite is central to assessments of styrene’s biological effects.
α-Methylstyrene: An aromatic monomer like styrene with an additional methyl group on its vinyl carbon. Its altered structure changes polymerization behavior and the properties of resulting materials.
Polystyrene: A thermoplastic polymer made from styrene monomers. It is the principal product of styrene polymerization.
Extruded polystyrene foam: A closed-cell insulation foam produced by extruding polystyrene with a blowing agent. It is a major building-insulation application of styrene-based polymer.
Pyrolysis: The thermal decomposition of materials in the absence of oxygen or with limited oxygen. Early styrene production came from heating natural resins and later ethylbenzene.
Styrene exposure: Human contact with styrene through inhalation, skin contact, or contaminated materials. Workplace exposure is a key health concern in styrene manufacture and polymer processing.
Methyl methacrylate: An ester monomer used to make polymethyl methacrylate, a transparent thermoplastic. It offers an alternative route to transparent plastics without styrene’s aromatic ring.
