Su Yu

Su Yu was a Chinese Communist military commander who became a senior general in the People’s Liberation Army. He helped lead major Communist campaigns during the Chinese Civil War.

Menglianggu Campaign: A 1947 Chinese Civil War campaign in which Communist forces destroyed the Nationalist 74th Division in Shandong. Su Yu devised the encirclement that destroyed the Nationalists’ elite 74th Division.
Mobile warfare: A military approach that uses movement and concentrated force to attack an opponent’s vulnerable positions. Su Yu used rapid movement to concentrate against isolated Nationalist formations.
Chen Yi: A Chinese Communist revolutionary and military commander who later served as foreign minister and mayor of Shanghai. Chen Yi and Su Yu worked together in leading Communist forces in eastern China.
Chinese Civil War: The conflict between the Chinese Nationalists and Communists that ended with Communist rule on the mainland in 1949. Su Yu’s campaigns helped determine the war’s outcome in eastern China.
Chinese Red Army: The armed forces of the Chinese Communist Party before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. Su Yu’s early military career developed within the Communist revolutionary forces.
Huaihai Campaign: A 1948–1949 campaign in which Communist forces defeated Nationalist armies across the Huaihai region. Su Yu proposed the campaign and helped direct its operations.
Encirclement: A military maneuver that surrounds an opposing force to restrict its movement and support. His campaigns repeatedly sought to isolate enemy units before destroying them.
Mao Zedong: The Chinese Communist leader who founded the People’s Republic of China and led the party from 1935 until his death. Mao’s strategic direction framed the campaigns Su Yu helped execute.
People's Liberation Army: The armed forces of the Chinese Communist Party and, after 1949, the People’s Republic of China. Su Yu became one of the army’s most senior commanders after the civil war.
Jiangxi Soviet: A Communist-controlled territory in southeastern China that existed from 1931 to 1934. Su Yu served in the Red Army during the revolutionary period associated with this base.
