Subsidiary alliance

A system of treaties through which Indian rulers accepted British troops, paid for their upkeep, and surrendered control over foreign relations in exchange for protection. It expanded British power while often preserving rulers’ nominal authority.

East India Company: An English joint-stock company that acquired territorial power in India and governed large areas before the British Crown took control. The Company negotiated and enforced subsidiary treaties as it expanded its authority.
Warren Hastings: The first governor-general of Bengal, who held office from 1773 to 1785 and expanded Company administration and diplomacy. His tenure saw early treaty arrangements that anticipated later subsidiary alliances.
Second Anglo-Maratha War: A war fought from 1803 to 1805 between the East India Company and several Maratha powers. The Treaty of Bassein helped precipitate this war and weakened Maratha independence.
Indirect rule: A form of imperial governance in which local rulers retain formal authority while an outside power exercises decisive control. Subsidiary alliances were a specific treaty-based form of indirect rule.
Hyderabad State: A princely state in the Deccan ruled by the Nizams from the eighteenth century until its integration into India in 1948. The Nizam’s agreement with the Company in 1798 became an early model for subsidiary alliances.
Lord Wellesley: Governor-general of India from 1798 to 1805, known for aggressively extending Company influence through war and treaties. He systematically used subsidiary alliances to bring Indian states under British influence.
Third Anglo-Maratha War: The 1817–1818 conflict in which the East India Company defeated the remaining major Maratha powers. Its outcome completed British predominance over much of India after decades of alliance and conflict.
Doctrine of lapse: A British annexation policy that denied recognition to adopted heirs in certain princely states. It replaced indirect influence with annexation, unlike the alliance’s retention of local rulers.
British Resident: A British official stationed at an Indian court to represent British interests and report on its affairs. Residents made British influence inside allied courts continuous and politically consequential.
Treaty of Allahabad: The 1765 agreement under which Mughal emperor Shah Alam II granted the East India Company revenue-collection rights in Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. It gave the Company fiscal power that helped support later military and diplomatic expansion.
