Subtraction

Subtraction is the arithmetic operation of finding how much remains or how far apart two quantities are. It is the inverse operation of addition.

Minuend: The quantity from which another quantity is subtracted. It names the starting quantity in a subtraction expression.
Natural number: A counting number, usually defined as a positive integer, sometimes including zero. Counting numbers are the simplest quantities commonly subtracted.
Measurement: The process of assigning numbers to quantities using defined units. Subtracting measurements finds a remaining amount or the gap between two readings.
Multiplication: The arithmetic operation of scaling one quantity by another, often understood as repeated addition. Unlike multiplication, subtraction is not commutative: reversing the operands can change the result.
Subtrahend: The quantity subtracted from another quantity. It names the quantity taken away from the minuend.
Integer: A number with no fractional part, including zero and negative numbers. Integers extend subtraction when the amount taken away exceeds the starting amount.
Elapsed time: The duration between a starting time and an ending time. Finding a duration often means subtracting the start time from the end time.
Division: The arithmetic operation of partitioning a quantity or determining how many times one quantity contains another. Division, like subtraction, is not commutative, but it reverses multiplication rather than addition.
Difference: The result of subtracting one quantity from another. It is the value subtraction calculates.
Place value: The value a digit represents because of its position in a numeral. Regrouping depends on exchanging units between place-value positions.
