Subtropical ridge

The subtropical ridge is a belt of high atmospheric pressure near 20°–35° latitude, associated with descending air and generally stable conditions.

Hadley cell: A tropical atmospheric circulation cell in which air rises near the equator, flows poleward aloft, and descends in the subtropics. The descending branch of this circulation helps sustain the ridge.
Bermuda–Azores high: A semipermanent subtropical anticyclone over the North Atlantic Ocean. Its position influences winds and weather around the North Atlantic.
Blocking anticyclone: A persistent high-pressure system that disrupts the usual eastward progression of weather systems. A strong ridge can help block storm tracks and prolong particular weather patterns.
Intertropical Convergence Zone: A near-equatorial zone where trade winds converge, air rises, and heavy rainfall commonly develops. It contrasts with the ridge through rising rather than descending air.
Atmospheric subsidence: The downward movement of air through the atmosphere, often producing warming and drying as pressure increases. Subsiding air creates the stable, dry conditions associated with high pressure.
Pacific high: A semipermanent subtropical high-pressure system over the North Pacific Ocean. Its seasonal shifts affect weather along western North America and the Pacific.
Drought: A sustained period of unusually low water availability relative to local conditions. Persistent subsidence beneath an expanded ridge can reduce rainfall and worsen drought.
Subpolar low: A belt of relatively low surface pressure near 60° latitude, associated with frequent cyclones. It lies poleward of the ridge and favors unsettled weather rather than stable subsidence.
Trade winds: Persistent tropical winds that generally blow from the subtropical high-pressure belts toward the equatorial low-pressure zone. The ridge helps drive the trade winds on its equatorward side.
Indian Ocean High: A subtropical high-pressure system over the southern Indian Ocean. It helps shape winds and rainfall around the Indian Ocean basin.
