Succession to Muhammad

The dispute over who should lead the Muslim community after Muhammad’s death in 632 CE. Its outcomes shaped Islamic political authority and the Sunni–Shi'a division.

Abu Bakr: The first caliph, who led the Muslim community from 632 to 634 CE. His selection at Saqifah established the first post-Muhammad leadership.
Sunni Islam: The largest branch of Islam, whose traditions recognize the early caliphs as legitimate successors to Muhammad. Its account accepts communal selection as the basis for the first caliphate.
Muhammad: The prophet of Islam, whose teachings and leadership formed the first Muslim community. His death left the community without an explicitly agreed successor.

Medina: A city in western Arabia that became the center of Muhammad’s community and early Muslim government. Its factions and leading families shaped the immediate succession negotiations.
Umayyad Caliphate: The caliphate ruled by the Umayyad dynasty from 661 to 750 CE. Muawiya’s accession after the First Fitna shifted leadership toward dynastic rule.
Ali: Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law, the fourth caliph and the first imam in Shi'a Islam. His claim to leadership became central to later disputes over succession.
Caliphate: A form of Islamic political leadership headed by a caliph. The dispute concerned who could legitimately hold this office.
