Sudanese independence

Sudanese independence was the end of Anglo-Egyptian rule and the establishment of the Republic of Sudan on 1 January 1956.

Anglo-Egyptian Sudan: The territory administered jointly by Britain and Egypt from 1899 until Sudanese independence in 1956. This joint administration was the political order that independence ended.
Anglo-Egyptian Agreement of 1953: An agreement between Britain and Egypt that established a transition to Sudanese self-government and elections. It set the timetable and framework for ending joint rule.
First Sudanese Civil War: A conflict between Sudan's central government and southern insurgents from 1955 to 1972. The war began just before independence and exposed deep disputes over power and regional autonomy.
Egyptian revolution of 1952: The overthrow of Egypt's monarchy by the Free Officers movement in July 1952. The revolution changed Egypt's approach to Sudan and accelerated negotiations over its status.
Sudanese nationalism: The movement advocating Sudanese political autonomy and, ultimately, independent statehood. Nationalist organizing turned opposition to foreign rule into a claim for sovereign government.
Sudanese parliamentary election of 1953: The election that formed Sudan's first parliament under the 1953 self-government agreement. Its result gave the independence process an elected political mandate.
Southern Sudanese autonomy: The political demand for self-rule in southern Sudan within or apart from a unified Sudanese state. Independence did not settle southern demands for representation and self-government.
Suez Crisis: The 1956 military intervention in Egypt by Britain, France, and Israel after Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal. Sudan became independent before the crisis, despite continuing British-Egyptian conflict.
Ismail al-Azhari: A Sudanese politician who led the National Unionist Party and became Sudan's first prime minister. His government oversaw the final transition to independence.
Self-government in Sudan: The transitional period of Sudanese internal administration established before full independence in 1956. Self-government provided the immediate institutional bridge to sovereignty.
