Sui dynasty

The Sui dynasty ruled a reunified China from 581 to 618. It rebuilt central government and infrastructure whose foundations the Tang dynasty adapted.

Emperor Wen of Sui: The founding emperor of the Sui dynasty, who ruled from 581 to 604 and reunified China. His consolidation of northern power and conquest of Chen established Sui rule over China.
Northern Zhou: A short-lived dynasty in northern China that ruled from 557 to 581. The Sui founder seized the Northern Zhou throne before extending control southward.
Yang Jian: The Chinese general who founded the Sui dynasty as Emperor Wen in 581. His seizure of the Northern Zhou throne created the dynasty.
Tang dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 618 to 907, following the Sui. The Tang inherited Sui’s reunified realm, administrative framework, and major construction projects.
Conquest of Chen: The Sui military campaign that defeated the Chen dynasty and unified China in 589. This conquest marks the end of centuries of north–south political division.
Emperor Yang of Sui: The second Sui emperor, whose reign from 604 to 618 combined major construction projects with costly campaigns. His projects and wars intensified the pressures that brought down the dynasty.
Chen dynasty: The last of the Southern Dynasties, ruling southern China from 557 until its conquest by Sui in 589. Its defeat ended the political division between northern and southern China.
Western Wei: A northern Chinese regime that ruled from 535 to 557 and shaped later northern dynasties. Sui’s ruling family rose within military and political networks formed under Western Wei.
Three Departments and Six Ministries: A central-government structure that divided high-level policy, administration, and ministerial functions in imperial China. Sui consolidated this framework, which the Tang retained and developed.
Battle of Salsu: A 612 battle in which Goguryeo forces defeated a Sui army near the Salsu River. The catastrophic defeat exemplified the cost of Emperor Yang’s Korean campaigns.
