Suicide attempt

A nonfatal, self-directed act undertaken with at least some intent to die. It differs from self-injury without suicidal intent by the presence of intent to die.

Suicidal ideation: Thoughts about suicide, ranging from wishing to be dead to considering or planning suicide. Ideation can precede an attempt, but thoughts alone are not an attempt.
Suicide risk assessment: A clinical evaluation of factors relevant to a person's likelihood of attempting or dying by suicide. After an attempt, assessment helps identify current danger and guide care.
Self-poisoning: Intentional ingestion or exposure to a substance capable of causing harm. It is one specific form an attempt can take and may cause delayed medical injury.
Suicide intent: The degree to which a person intended to die through a self-directed act. Intent may be mixed, changing, or difficult to reconstruct after an attempt.
Nonsuicidal self-injury: Deliberate self-inflicted injury without intent to die. It can resemble an attempt in behavior but is distinguished by the absence of suicidal intent.
Safety planning: A collaborative, written plan for responding to warning signs and reducing access to lethal means during a crisis. A plan can help structure support and coping after an attempt.
Trauma surgery: Surgical care for injuries caused by sudden physical trauma. Some nonfatal attempts cause injuries requiring urgent surgical treatment.
Suicide risk prediction: Methods for estimating the likelihood of future suicidal behavior or death. Past attempts matter clinically, yet individual future outcomes remain difficult to predict.
Suicide: Death caused by self-directed behavior undertaken with intent to die. An attempt is nonfatal; suicide results in death.
Emergency psychiatry: Psychiatric assessment and treatment for acute mental health crises requiring urgent care. Some attempts require immediate psychiatric evaluation alongside medical treatment.
