Sukhāvatī

Sukhāvatī is a pure land in Mahayana Buddhism presided over by Amitābha Buddha. Pure Land traditions describe it as a realm where conditions favor progress toward enlightenment.

Amitābha: A Buddha associated with infinite light and life, central to Pure Land Buddhism. Amitābha presides over Sukhāvatī and is the focus of devotion directed toward rebirth there.
Pratyutpanna Samādhi Sūtra: An early Mahayana scripture describing a meditation in which Amitābha can appear before practitioners. It connects contemplative practice with visions of Amitābha and the western pure land.
Dharmākara: The bodhisattva who, according to Pure Land scriptures, made vows and became Amitābha Buddha. His vows establish the origin story of Sukhāvatī.
Pure Land Buddhism: Mahayana Buddhist traditions centered on Amitābha, devotion, and aspiration for birth in a pure land. Sukhāvatī is the principal destination and organizing image of these traditions.
Tuṣita: A Buddhist heaven where Maitreya Bodhisattva resides before his future birth as a Buddha. Unlike Sukhāvatī, Tuṣita is associated with Maitreya and his future appearance in the human world.

Larger Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra: A Mahayana scripture recounting Dharmākara’s vows and the establishment of Sukhāvatī. Its account of Amitābha’s vows explains the conditions for birth in the land.
Gandhāran Buddhism: An ancient Buddhist culture centered in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent and neighboring regions. Early evidence for Amitābha devotion is associated with the wider northwestern Buddhist world.
Nembutsu: The Japanese practice of invoking or recollecting Amitābha, often through the phrase Namu Amida Butsu. Its recitation expresses aspiration for birth in Sukhāvatī across Japanese Pure Land schools.
Abhirati: The eastern pure land presided over by Akṣobhya Buddha. Abhirati offers a parallel pure-land model with a different presiding Buddha and direction.
