Sulfur hexafluoride

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) is a colorless, odorless, nonflammable gas composed of sulfur and fluorine. It is widely used as an electrical insulator and is a potent, long-lived greenhouse gas.

Octahedral molecular geometry: A molecular shape in which six surrounding atoms occupy the vertices of an octahedron around a central atom. Six fluorine atoms surround sulfur in this symmetric arrangement.
Gas-insulated switchgear: High-voltage electrical equipment whose conductors and switching components are insulated within pressurized gas compartments. SF₆ has traditionally served as the insulating and arc-quenching gas in this equipment.
Global warming potential: A measure comparing the heat trapped by a greenhouse gas over a chosen period with that trapped by carbon dioxide. SF₆ has an exceptionally high global warming potential per unit mass.
Nitrogen: A chemical element that makes up most of Earth’s atmosphere and commonly occurs as N₂ gas. Nitrogen is a lower-climate-impact gas used in some insulating mixtures and equipment.
Henri Moissan: A French chemist who isolated elemental fluorine in 1886 and won the 1906 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Moissan’s work made the fluorine chemistry needed to prepare SF₆ accessible.
Dielectric strength: The maximum electric field an insulating material can withstand before electrical breakdown. SF₆ suppresses electrical breakdown in high-voltage equipment.
Gas circuit breaker: A circuit breaker that uses pressurized gas to extinguish the electrical arc formed when contacts separate. SF₆’s electron-capturing behavior helps extinguish switching arcs.
Atmospheric lifetime: The average time a substance remains in the atmosphere before removal by chemical or physical processes. SF₆ persists for thousands of years, making emissions effectively cumulative.
Carbon dioxide: A colorless gas composed of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms, produced by respiration and combustion. CO₂-based mixtures can replace SF₆ in some switchgear, though they require design trade-offs.
Fluorine chemistry: The chemistry of fluorine and its compounds, shaped by fluorine’s high reactivity and electronegativity. SF₆ is a stable product of sulfur–fluorine chemistry.
