Sultanate of Golconda

A Deccan kingdom ruled by the Qutb Shahi dynasty from 1518 until its conquest by the Mughal Empire in 1687. Its rulers shaped Hyderabad into a major political and cultural center.

Qutb Shahi dynasty: The dynasty that ruled Golconda and Hyderabad from 1518 to 1687. Its founding established the kingdom’s ruling house and political identity.
Golconda Fort: A fortified citadel near Hyderabad that served as Golconda’s original capital. Its defenses and hilltop position made it the kingdom’s principal stronghold.
Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah: The fifth Qutb Shahi ruler, who founded Hyderabad and wrote poetry in Dakhini. His reign moved the capital and fostered a distinctive literary court.
Siege of Golconda: The Mughal siege that culminated in the capture of Golconda in 1687. The siege ended the sultanate’s independence after a prolonged campaign.
Bijapur Sultanate: A Deccan sultanate ruled by the Adil Shahi dynasty from the late fifteenth century until 1686. Bijapur was a neighboring rival and occasional ally before Mughal conquest.
Bahmani Sultanate: A Deccan sultanate that ruled much of the region from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Golconda arose as Bahmani authority fragmented.
Hyderabad: A city in south-central India founded by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591. The new capital extended royal authority beyond the old fort.
Abdullah Qutb Shah: The seventh Qutb Shahi ruler, who reigned from 1626 to 1672. His reign saw Golconda navigate growing Mughal pressure and Deccan alliances.
Aurangzeb: The sixth Mughal emperor, whose reign lasted from 1658 to 1707. He directed the Mughal campaign that conquered Golconda.
Ahmadnagar Sultanate: A Deccan sultanate founded by the Nizam Shahi dynasty in 1490 and conquered by the Mughals in 1636. Its earlier fall illustrates the pressure that later threatened Golconda.
