Sultanate of Gowa

The Sultanate of Gowa was a Makassar state in southern Sulawesi that became a major maritime power and adopted Islam in the early seventeenth century.

Makassar: Makassar is a port city in southern Sulawesi and the historic center of the Makassar people. Gowa’s capital and port anchored its political power and long-distance trade.
Makassar people: The Makassar people are an ethnic group native to southern Sulawesi, Indonesia. Gowa was the leading Makassar polity, and its court helped shape Makassar political identity.
Somba Opu: Somba Opu was Gowa’s fortified royal center and port near present-day Makassar. It concentrated the court, defenses, and commerce that sustained Gowa’s power.
Arung Palakka: Arung Palakka was a Bugis leader who allied with the Dutch against Gowa. His forces were decisive allies in the campaign that defeated Sultan Hasanuddin.
Sultan Hasanuddin: Sultan Hasanuddin was Gowa’s ruler from 1653 to 1669, remembered for resisting Dutch expansion. His resistance culminated in Gowa’s defeat by the Dutch and their allies.
South Sulawesi: South Sulawesi is an Indonesian province occupying the southwestern peninsula of Sulawesi. Gowa emerged among the kingdoms and trading communities of this region.
