Sultanate of Ternate

A Muslim sultanate based on Ternate Island in the Maluku Islands, influential in the spice trade and regional politics from the fifteenth century onward.

Clove trade: The production and exchange of cloves, a spice native to the Maluku Islands. Control of clove-producing islands made Ternate a major commercial power.

Fort Oranje: A Dutch fort in Ternate, first established by the Dutch East India Company in 1607. Its construction embodied the Dutch effort to make commercial influence into lasting political control.
