Knowra Sultanate of Women Sultanate of Women A period in the Ottoman Empire, chiefly during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when royal women wielded substantial influence over dynastic politics and government.
Hürrem Sultan : The wife of Suleiman the Magnificent, who gained exceptional political influence and helped establish a new role for royal consorts. Her influence under Suleiman is often treated as an early turning point in the period.
Valide Sultan : The title and office of an Ottoman sultan’s living mother, often accompanied by significant authority at court. The valide sultan’s position gave a reigning mother institutional access to government and succession politics.
Ottoman dynasty : The ruling family of the Ottoman Empire, which governed from its foundation until the empire’s abolition. The period’s politics arose within the dynasty’s household and succession system.
Ottoman court : The political and administrative household surrounding the Ottoman sultan and his government. Women’s access to the court altered how influence moved between the palace and officials.
