Sultanate

A state or territory ruled by a sultan, a sovereign title used across the Islamic world. Sultanates have varied widely in size, institutions, and historical setting.

Sultan: A ruler whose title, used across the Islamic world, has carried different forms of sovereign authority. The sultan’s authority defines the state, though its legal and political reach varied.
Islamic political thought: The body of ideas about political authority, governance, and community developed in Muslim societies. It supplied competing arguments about the legitimacy and duties of sultanic rule.
Bengal Sultanate: An independent Muslim kingdom in Bengal that existed in several phases from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Its regional court and coinage expressed sovereignty beyond northern India’s better-known sultanates.

Seljuk Empire: A medieval Turkic empire whose rulers used the title sultan and governed much of the Middle East. The Seljuks helped establish sultan as a prominent title for political rule.
Caliphate: A form of Islamic political leadership associated with the office of caliph and the Muslim community. Sultans often held practical power while caliphs retained religious or symbolic claims to leadership.
Sultanate of Aceh: A Muslim state in northern Sumatra that became a major regional power from the sixteenth century. Aceh shows the title’s role in maritime Southeast Asian politics.
Kingdom: A state or territory ruled by a king or queen, often through hereditary succession. Kingdom provides a comparable sovereign state form without relying on the title sultan.
Delhi Sultanate: A succession of Muslim dynasties that ruled much of northern India from 1206 to 1526. Its dynasties formed a major South Asian example of sultanate government.
Mamluk: A military slave or former slave who rose to political and military power in several Islamic states. Mamluk elites could seize sovereignty and create a ruling sultanate.
