Sumatra

Sumatra is a large Indonesian island in the Malay Archipelago, between the Indian Ocean and the Strait of Malacca. Its active volcanoes, rainforests, and position along major maritime routes shape its landscapes and history.

Sunda Islands: An archipelago spanning Indonesia and nearby parts of Southeast Asia, divided into the Greater and Lesser Sunda Islands. Sumatra is the westernmost of the Greater Sunda Islands.
Mount Kerinci: An active volcano in western Sumatra and the highest mountain in Indonesia outside Papua. It is the tallest peak of the Barisan range and a prominent active volcano.
Austronesian peoples: A large language family and the diverse peoples whose languages descend from a common ancestral language. Austronesian-speaking communities shaped Sumatra’s settlement and cultural history.
2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami: A major undersea earthquake and tsunami on 26 December 2004 that devastated coastlines around the Indian Ocean. The earthquake ruptured offshore from northern Sumatra, where the tsunami caused catastrophic loss of life.
Java: An Indonesian island south of Borneo and east of Sumatra, home to most of Indonesia’s population. Java is more densely populated, while Sumatra retains larger areas of forest and sparsely settled land.
Barisan Mountains: A mountain range running nearly the length of western Sumatra, including numerous active volcanoes. The range forms the island’s volcanic spine and separates much of its west and east.
Gunung Leuser National Park: A protected area in northern Sumatra encompassing rainforest, mountains, and diverse wildlife. It safeguards one of the island’s largest remaining stretches of rainforest.
Srivijaya: A maritime Buddhist empire based around Sumatra that dominated parts of Southeast Asian trade from roughly the seventh to thirteenth centuries. Its Sumatran center made the island a major power in regional commerce.
2005 Nias–Simeulue earthquake: A powerful 2005 earthquake off northern Sumatra that ruptured part of the Sunda megathrust. It followed the 2004 rupture along the same earthquake-generating plate boundary.
Borneo: An island in Southeast Asia shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. Borneo is Sumatra’s other major rainforest island in the Greater Sunda group.
