Sun Li-jen

Sun Li-jen was a Chinese Nationalist general who fought Japan in the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Communists in the Chinese Civil War. In Taiwan, the Kuomintang government kept him under house arrest from 1955 until 1988.

Battle of Yunnan-Burma Road: A series of World War II battles in which Chinese forces fought to reopen the land route between China and Burma. Sun commanded Chinese forces during the 1944 campaign to reopen this supply route.
Tsinghua University: A major Chinese university founded in Beijing in 1911. Sun studied there before receiving military education in the United States.
Chiang Kai-shek: A Chinese Nationalist military and political leader who headed the Republic of China government for much of 1928–1975. Sun's professional standing and later confinement were bound to Chiang's authority in the Kuomintang.
Bai Chongxi: A Chinese Nationalist general and politician who played a major role in military campaigns and government affairs. Unlike Sun, Bai remained an influential political figure after the Nationalists retreated to Taiwan.
Chinese Expeditionary Force: Chinese Nationalist troops sent to Burma and India during World War II to fight Japanese forces. Sun led units of this force, including troops trained and equipped in India.
Virginia Military Institute: A public senior military college in Lexington, Virginia, founded in 1839. Sun graduated from the institute in 1927, an unusual route for a Chinese general of his generation.
Stilwell and the American Experience in China: The U.S. Army general Joseph Stilwell's wartime service in China and Burma during World War II. Sun's forces worked with the Allied command in Burma, where Stilwell held a senior role.
Du Yuming: A Chinese Nationalist general captured by Communist forces during the Chinese Civil War and later released. His capture and postwar fate contrast with Sun's continued service followed by confinement in Taiwan.
New 38th Division: A Chinese Nationalist Army division that fought in Burma during World War II. Sun's command of this division helped establish his reputation as a battlefield leader.
Purdue University: A public research university in West Lafayette, Indiana, founded in 1869. Sun studied civil engineering there before transferring to Virginia Military Institute.
