Sun Quan

Sun Quan was the founder and first emperor of Eastern Wu, one of the Three Kingdoms states. He ruled from 222 until his death in 252.

Sun Jian: A warlord of the late Han dynasty and Sun Quan’s father. Sun Jian’s military following and regional foothold passed to his sons.
Battle of Red Cliffs: A 208–209 naval campaign in which allied forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei defeated Cao Cao’s southern advance. The victory prevented Cao Cao from conquering Sun Quan’s Yangtze base.
Cao Cao: A late Han warlord who controlled northern China and founded the political base of the state of Cao Wei. Sun Quan resisted Cao Cao’s expansion while sometimes acknowledging his nominal authority.
Three Kingdoms: The period in Chinese history when Wei, Shu, and Wu competed for control after the Han dynasty’s collapse. Sun Quan’s state was one of the three rival regimes defining the period.
Sun Ce: A warlord who conquered territories in the lower Yangtze and established the Sun family’s power base. His conquests created the domain Sun Quan inherited in 200.
Lü Meng: A general of Eastern Wu who led the 219 campaign that captured Jing Province from Liu Bei’s forces. His seizure of Jing strengthened Wu’s western frontier and altered Sun Quan’s alliance with Shu.
Liu Bei: A warlord who founded Shu Han and claimed the imperial legacy of the Han dynasty. Sun Quan alternated between alliance and war with Liu Bei.
Emperor of Wu: The imperial title Sun Quan adopted when he proclaimed the independence of Eastern Wu in 229. The title marked his shift from regional ruler to sovereign emperor.
Eastern Wu: A state that ruled southeastern China during the Three Kingdoms period, from 229 to 280. Sun Quan’s regime became the state later known as Eastern Wu.
Lu Xun: An Eastern Wu general and statesman who defeated Liu Bei at the Battle of Xiaoting in 222. His victory checked Shu’s invasion after Sun Quan’s break with Liu Bei.
