Sunda Plate

The Sunda Plate is a tectonic plate underlying the Sunda region of Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, western Indonesia, and the South China Sea. Its boundaries include major subduction zones and strike-slip faults.

Sunda Trench: An oceanic trench marking the subduction boundary south and west of Sumatra and Java. The Indo-Australian Plate descends beneath the Sunda Plate along this boundary.
Tectonic plate: A large, rigid section of Earth’s lithosphere that moves over the underlying mantle. The Sunda Plate is one such moving lithospheric section.
2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami: A magnitude 9.1–9.3 megathrust earthquake off northern Sumatra that generated a devastating Indian Ocean tsunami. Its rupture occurred on the Sunda megathrust at the plate’s western margin.
Sunda Plate boundary: The mapped edge separating the Sunda Plate from neighboring plates and smaller crustal blocks. Its northeastern and eastern limits remain less sharply defined than major subduction margins.
Sunda megathrust: The plate-boundary fault where the Indo-Australian Plate thrusts beneath the Sunda Plate. Locked sections of this fault can rupture in great earthquakes.
Sunda Shelf: A shallow continental shelf connecting mainland Southeast Asia with Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. It forms a submerged extension of the continental crust carried by the Sunda Plate.
2006 Yogyakarta earthquake: A magnitude 6.3 earthquake in central Java that caused severe damage and loss of life. It illustrates damaging earthquakes within the overriding Sunda Plate region.
Sunda block: A proposed crustal block in Southeast Asia whose distinction from the Sunda Plate varies among models. The name reflects competing interpretations of whether the region moves as a single plate or a smaller block.
Great Sumatran fault: A major right-lateral strike-slip fault running along the length of Sumatra. It accommodates part of the oblique convergence between the plates.
South China Sea: A marginal sea of the western Pacific bordered by Southeast Asia and southern China. Its crust lies largely within the Sunda Plate’s northern region.
