Sunni–Shia relations

Sunni–Shia relations are the historical and contemporary interactions between the two largest branches of Islam, shaped by shared beliefs, disagreements over religious authority, and political conflict and cooperation.

Succession to Muhammad: The dispute over who should lead the Muslim community after Muhammad’s death in 632. Competing views of legitimate leadership became the historical starting point for Sunni–Shia divisions.
Imamate in Shia Islam: The Shia doctrine that divinely guided leaders from Muhammad’s family hold religious authority. Its account of leadership differs from Sunni models and structures many intercommunal debates.
Safavid Iran: The Iranian state ruled by the Safavid dynasty from 1501 to 1736, which established Twelver Shiism as its official religion. Safavid state-building sharpened the political boundary between Iran and its Sunni neighbors.
Shia Islam: A major branch of Islam that recognizes Ali and designated descendants of Muhammad as rightful religious leaders. Its doctrines and historical narratives differ from Sunni traditions without determining every political relationship.
Ali: The fourth caliph in Sunni Islam and the first imam in Shia Islam, and Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law. His leadership and family became central to Shia claims and Sunni accounts of early community history.
Caliphate: A political institution of Muslim governance led by a caliph. Historical claims to the caliphate shaped rival accounts of legitimate rule and communal authority.
Ottoman–Safavid relations: The rivalry and diplomacy between the Sunni Ottoman Empire and Shia Safavid Iran. Their wars and borders gave sectarian difference a durable geopolitical form.
Islamic ecumenism: Efforts to foster recognition and cooperation among different Islamic traditions. It offers a deliberate alternative to treating Sunni–Shia difference as inevitable hostility.
Battle of Karbala: The 680 battle in which Umayyad forces killed Husayn ibn Ali and his supporters. Husayn’s death became a defining memory in Shia identity and a major point of shared historical reference.
Ashura: The tenth day of Muharram, observed by Muslims in varied ways and especially associated with Husayn’s death in Shia Islam. Its public commemorations make distinct historical memories visible in shared societies.
