Śūnyatā

Śūnyatā is the Buddhist doctrine that phenomena lack independent, permanent existence and arise through conditions and relations. It does not mean that phenomena are nonexistent, but that they have no self-sustaining essence.

Pratītyasamutpāda: The Buddhist principle that phenomena arise in dependence on causes, conditions, and relations. Śūnyatā describes the lack of independence implied by this conditional arising.
Madhyamaka: A Mahāyāna philosophical tradition that uses critical reasoning to establish the emptiness of phenomena. It develops systematic arguments against intrinsic existence.
Prajñāpāramitā: A body of Mahāyāna scriptures centered on the perfection of wisdom and the emptiness of phenomena. These texts give emptiness a prominent role in Mahāyāna teaching.
Nihilism: The denial that anything exists or that claims about reality can be true. Śūnyatā denies independent essence, not the conventional existence and causal efficacy of phenomena.
Bodhisattva: A being who seeks awakening for the benefit of all sentient beings in Mahāyāna Buddhism. The bodhisattva ideal joins insight into emptiness with compassionate engagement.
Anātman: The Buddhist teaching that persons have no permanent, independent self. The analysis of persons without a fixed self is a key precedent for applying emptiness to all phenomena.
Nāgārjuna: An Indian Buddhist philosopher traditionally dated to around the second or third century CE and associated with Madhyamaka. His arguments made dependent arising and emptiness central to Madhyamaka philosophy.
Heart Sutra: A short Mahāyāna scripture that presents the five aggregates as empty. Its concise formula links emptiness to the familiar analysis of personal experience.
Yogācāra: A Mahāyāna Buddhist tradition analyzing experience, consciousness, and the construction of subject-object distinctions. Its account of emptiness differs from Madhyamaka’s emphasis on the lack of intrinsic nature in all phenomena.
Prajñā: Wisdom that understands reality in Buddhist traditions. In Mahāyāna, wisdom directly realizing emptiness is central to the path.
