Super star cluster

A young, massive, compact star cluster containing thousands to millions of stars. Super star clusters often form during intense bursts of star formation.

Star cluster: A gravitationally associated group of stars that formed together or remain bound over time. Super star clusters are an exceptionally massive, compact kind of star cluster.
Cluster formation: The process by which stars form together in gravitationally associated groups. Super star clusters arise when cluster formation proceeds on an unusually massive, compact scale.
R136: A dense young star cluster at the center of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Its concentration of very massive young stars makes it a nearby benchmark for super star clusters.
Integrated spectroscopy: The analysis of a spectrum combining light from all stars and gas within an unresolved astronomical source. It estimates cluster ages, chemical composition, and stellar content when individual stars cannot be separated.
Cluster infant mortality: The rapid dispersal of many young stellar groupings within the first few million years after formation. It raises the question of what fraction of apparent young clusters are bound super star clusters.
Stellar population: A group of stars characterized by shared properties such as age, chemical composition, or formation history. A cluster’s stellar population reveals its age and the burst that formed it.
Starburst galaxy: A galaxy forming stars at a rate far above its long-term average. Starbursts create dense environments where massive clusters can form in large numbers.
NGC 1569-A: A luminous, compact young star cluster in the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1569. It is a well-studied example of massive cluster formation in a starburst environment.
Color–magnitude diagram: A plot comparing astronomical objects’ brightness with their color, often used to infer stellar properties and ages. Resolved cluster stars can reveal the ages and evolutionary stages hidden in their combined light.
Hierarchical star formation: A model in which stars form across a continuous range of scales and densities rather than in isolated units. It challenges whether super star clusters have a distinct formation pathway or are the densest part of a continuum.
