Supergravity

Supergravity is a theory combining general relativity with supersymmetry, in which gravity is mediated by a particle called the gravitino. Its local supersymmetry relates bosons and fermions.

Gravitino: The hypothetical spin-3/2 gauge particle associated with local supersymmetry and supergravity. It is the fermionic partner of the graviton and mediates local supersymmetry.
General relativity: Einstein's theory in which gravity is the curvature of spacetime produced by energy and momentum. Supergravity retains its dynamical spacetime geometry while adding supersymmetry.
Daniel Z. Freedman: An American theoretical physicist whose work helped establish four-dimensional supergravity. Freedman, Sergio Ferrara, and Peter van Nieuwenhuizen constructed the first four-dimensional supergravity in 1976.
String theory: A framework in which fundamental objects are one-dimensional strings whose excitations appear as particles. Supergravity theories describe low-energy limits of string theories.
Global supersymmetry: Supersymmetry transformations whose parameters are constant across spacetime. Unlike global supersymmetry, supergravity gauges the symmetry and includes dynamical gravity.
Graviton: The hypothetical quantum of the gravitational field, with spin 2. Supergravity pairs the graviton with the gravitino in its simplest multiplet.
Supersymmetry: A proposed symmetry relating bosons, which have integer spin, to fermions, which have half-integer spin. Supergravity makes this symmetry local rather than a global transformation.
Sergio Ferrara: An Italian theoretical physicist whose work helped establish supergravity and supersymmetric field theory. Ferrara co-discovered the first four-dimensional supergravity with Freedman and van Nieuwenhuizen.
M-theory: A proposed framework unifying the five consistent superstring theories and incorporating eleven-dimensional supergravity. Eleven-dimensional supergravity captures the low-energy dynamics of M-theory.
Superstring theory: String theory that includes supersymmetry on the string world sheet and in its spacetime spectrum. It is a broader quantum-gravity framework whose low-energy limit can be supergravity.
