Superheavy element research

Superheavy element research studies the production, identification, and properties of elements with very high atomic numbers, whose nuclei decay rapidly.

Heavy-ion fusion: A nuclear reaction in which two nuclei collide and may combine into a heavier nucleus. Superheavy nuclei are synthesized by fusing accelerated ions with target nuclei.
Atomic number: The number of protons in an atomic nucleus, which defines the chemical element. A new element is established by demonstrating a nucleus with a previously unobserved proton count.
Transfermium Wars: A scientific dispute in the 1960s and 1970s over priority for discovering elements beyond fermium. Conflicts over evidence and credit shaped later standards for validating new elements.
Island of stability: A predicted region of superheavy nuclei with longer lifetimes due to favorable proton and neutron shell structure. Reaching longer-lived nuclei is a central motivation for new synthesis routes.
Cold fusion (nuclear physics): A heavy-ion fusion approach that forms excited compound nuclei with relatively low excitation energy. This production route helped create elements through bohrium using lead or bismuth targets.
Nuclear shell model: A model that describes nuclear structure using energy levels occupied by protons and neutrons. Shell structure helps explain why some very heavy nuclei may resist fission longer than expected.
Yuri Oganessian: A nuclear physicist known for leading experiments that synthesized several of the heaviest elements. His Dubna teams pioneered actinide-target reactions central to modern superheavy-element production.
Superheavy element chemistry: The study of chemical properties of elements with very high atomic numbers, often using single atoms. Rapid, atom-at-a-time experiments test whether relativistic effects alter expected periodic trends.
Hot fusion (nuclear physics): A heavy-ion fusion approach that forms compound nuclei at higher excitation energy, often using actinide targets. Actinide-target reactions enabled the synthesis of elements beyond the cold-fusion range.
Nuclear shell effect: A change in nuclear binding energy caused by the structure of proton and neutron energy shells. Its predicted extra binding underlies expectations of enhanced stability among superheavy nuclei.
